mac-address of a switch

hi,

    When i do "Show version"  I see a base mac-address but when i do sh int fa0/1  i see another mac address ?

1] does it means that switch has its own base mac-address , so for what purpose it is used ?

Hi,

this is the mac-address used for deriving the BID  in STP BPDUs.

Hi,

The switch has one base ethernet MAC address and one MAC address for each switchport.

There are different MAC addresses on each switchport because they are needed for various purposes. One of which, is the spanning tree protocol (STP).
