Not getting passed enable mode

Hello,

Whenever I try to login as local user (no RADIUS or TACACS+ configured) it lets me login but not letting me pass enable mode. It shows "Error in Authentication" message. I have 2 users and both users are doing that. any solutions, tips, or commands that I can get passed or to resolve this? Also, any reason why this happened?

Thank you.

we are not sure have you configured enabled password and login information also - to confirm all the configuraiton is correct

can you post device information and show run from the device to understand the issue.

How to Ask The Cisco Community for Help

unfortunately I do not have configs backed up and I'm not sure what commands to type to see the current configs as I'm not able to get passed enable mode. I was able to login and pass enable mode when I added 2nd user but after that for some reason it shows me this error.

If we do not know what type of device this is, and if we do not have any config information to work with it is quite difficult to give good advice. But we will try with the limited information that we have. Am I correct in assuming these things:

- when it was working that you would login using the first user name and password, which would put you in user mode and then you would enter the enable command, be prompted for the enable password, would enter the enable password and get into enable mode.

- you went into config mode and added a second user.

- now you can login using either the first or second user name and associated password and get into user mode with either of the user names. But when you attempt to enter enable mode the enable password is no long accepted?

If all of those are true it is quite likely that the problem is that while you were in config mode you also changed the enable password. If that is the case then I have a few suggestions, starting from more simple to do but less likely to actually resolve the issue:

1) power cycle the router. If you did not save the config changes to startup then power cycle will discard the changes and you will be back with 1 user configured and the original enable password. This is a long shot but the most simple so lets start there.

2) is the device configured to communicate with a SNMP server, and if so does the SNMP server have read and write privileges? Is so it might be possible to change the enable password using SNMP. This is also a long shot but worth suggesting since it is easier than the third suggestion.

3) perform the password recovery procedure for your device.
