quick qos question

hi all

quick qos question,

if I have with the command bandwidth, class A 30%, class B 30% and class C 20%, the default will have 20% right?

the question is, the default class can take up to the 100% of the BW if the other classes are not using it?

This is a little platform

This is a little platform specific.

Most platforms have a default allocation limit, so classes can only consume up to that (for example, the sum of all classes can not exceed 80%).  Most platforms also allow you to adjust this, so you can allocate up to 100%.

Some platforms let you just allocate 100%.

Your question seems CBWFQ related, and as noted by Philip, there can be platform (and IOS version) differences, such as with class bandwidth allocations.

if I have with the command bandwidth, class A 30%, class B 30% and class C 20%, the default will have 20% right?

That varies, for example, pre-HQF, by default, non-default classes, combined, could not allocate more than 75%.  Class default didn't require an explicit bandwidth allocation, and if FQ was used, it wasn't directly capped by the class's bandwidth.

Post-HQF, I'm unsure what class default's "official" allocation is if not explicitly defined.  If defined, is would be what's defined, although all the classes together don't need to sum to 100%.  When they don't, I don't know how the "excess" is proportioned; it may vary across platforms.

BTW, what bandwidth settings really do is proportion bandwidth between classes, so (just) two classes of 3% would each be "guaranteed" 50% bandwidth.

the question is, the default class can take up to the 100% of the BW if the other classes are not using it?

Generally, unless there's a policer or shaper, classes are not limited by their bandwidth allowances, and any such class can use 100% of the bandwidth.
