Spanning Tree Limits

I have spanning tree set up on Switch -1 for my management vlan which is the root (Mgmt vlan is on all switches). I have 4 switches that do have the management vlan on them in addition to a SAN VLAN.   Switch 1 does not have the SAN VLAN active. Is it possible to implement STP on the SAN VLAN for Switches 3,4,5,6 with lets say Switch 5 as the root? So Switch 1 is the root for Mgmt VLAN and Switch 5 is the root for VLAN 200. will this work?

Hi Anthony,

Yes, what you propose is possible without problems. You simply configure the STP priority on the intended root switch for the particular VLAN to a sufficiently low value so that it becomes the root switch for the particular VLAN. Cisco switches run so-called Per-VLAN Spanning Tree (PVST) or its improved version Rapid PVST that allows for separate and independent STP settings for each VLAN.
