Generally, stack switching is software that makes multiple devices behave as if it was one device. Often special ports are used, which may be optional equipment.
Cisco support stack switching for the 3850, 3650 and the earlier 3750 series. They also support stack switching in the 2960S and 2960X series.
VSS, found on some 6500s, 6800s and 4500s, might be considered very similar to stack switch. However, VSS uses ordinary ports and is limited to just two member devices.
