Switch MIB Software Questions

I own SG220-50P and SG220-26P switches for my home network.  I have always kept the firmware updated.  Other than assigning them each a static IP address, I have kept the switch settings at default.  I have never downloaded and installed the MIB software however.

1. Is that software installed on a local computer, or does it get installed into the switches directly?

2. Would I install MIB software separately for each switch?

3. Would my switches perform any better with MIB installed, even if I didn't change any settings in the software?

Thanks!

MIB stand for Management Information Base. It is like a data base reader to find information about the devices. MIB is not a software itself.

1. Is that software installed on a local computer, or does it get installed into the switches directly?

You can install MIB reader in your computer and dowload  MIB Data base from Cisco site.

2. Would I install MIB software separately for each switch?

You are not installing anything on the switch. Switch have all it needs, you are going to do is seach for information on switch using the MIB tree. Each OID means some information you get get from device.

3. Would my switches perform any better with MIB installed, even if I didn't change any settings in the software?

No.

Thank you for your response. It doesn't sound like reading the MIB data would be of help in a home environment.

Dont think it will.  MIB is basically used for monitoring. If you have a monitoring tool based on SNMP protocol so that´s what MIB is used for. And only this.

There´s just a few things we could do to improve switches performance. Usually, the best setup is the default one. Switch is a very performing device if you  choose properly according with your environment.
