Tracking network speed

Hi there

I am assigned to check the issues with this attached network and have managed to remove some hups and redesign the network to what it is now. there were no vlans and it has been configured. the issue is that the internet speed is extremely slow. there is no access list in all switches, no firewall, just about what is listed below. how do I test if the issue is from the configurations or the service provider?

to do some testing, to test the speed, I shutdown all interfaces on the core switch but the switch to which my PC was connected to, All servers interface, the VPN interface, with no luck.

-Unfortunately, I dont have access to the routers yet.

Routers cisco 2900

Core sw: 4503E

Access sw: 2960 48p

links between core sw and routers are utp cat6

links between core sw and access sw are Fibre

(configurations in the core sw:)

- interface between switches:

switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q

 switchport mode trunk

 spanning-tree guard loop

- interface to internet router:

 no switchport

 ip address 10.113.6.101 255.255.255.0

 spanning-tree portfast

-interface to vpn router

no switchport

 ip address 10.113.5.6 255.255.255.252

 spanning-tree portfast

-other configuration

router rip

 version 2

 network 10.0.0.0

 no auto-summary

!

ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.113.6.1

ip route 91.x.x.x 255.255.255.0 10.113.6.1

Hi,

If you don't have access to the router, then start your test from the core switch and go down the stack. Also, ask the provider to test your Internet circuit give you the numbers, and see if it matches the contract speed you are paying for.

Hi Reze

Thank you for the quick reply. I will call them tomorrow. Meanwhile, could you please provide me with what should I look for when I test from the core switch?

Hi,

This is a pretty good tool we have used in the past for speed testing.

Hello,

you could run a speedtest (such as https://fast.com/) from a laptop or PC connected to the core switch, an access switch, and when directly connected to the router. I would start with the router (as this tells you what up and download speeds you are actually getting from your provider. If your clients get (much) less than that, the bottleneck is within your local network.

from the router directly, im getting full speed which is 10mb. from other stations 120kp

What's your Internet connection spec?

What model 2900 router?

How slow is slow, or what kind of Internet speed are you receiving?

120kbps

however, internet is if connected my laptop to the router directly
