Two IPs sharing a MAC Address

I have an interesting application where I have a server that has a Real IP and a Virtual IP. However, my software does not allow me to create a different mac-address.

Assuming my clients are on a different subnet, how will the packets from clients figure out how to get back to the server?hash

The server has one nic and that nic is plugged into port 2 of a switch hanging off the other side of Cisco 1310 wireless workgroup bridge.

So far my testing has suggested that the packet is sent to my core but it does not come back.  More testing to follow.

However,my initial thought that is that this should still work. That CAM table on the switch should just drop off the packet to the right port and the IP shouldn't matter.

There may be some aspects of your situation that we do not yet understand. But from your description I would think that it should work. If the server has a real IP and a virtual IP are they both in the same subnet? Perhaps some detail about the specific addresses and the subnet mask might be helpful.

Assuming that both addreses are in the same subnet then I would expect that the server would respond to ARP requests for either IP address using the same MAC address. There should not be a problem about having multiple IP addresses in the ARP table with the same MAC address.

Perhaps the output of traceroute from the server to some client and from some client to the address(s) of the server might be helpful.
