Anyone  have any idea what this message means or relates to?

An internal software error has occurred.

Recommended Action: Copy the error message exactly as it appears on the console or in the system log, contact your Cisco technical support representative, and provide the representative with the gathered information.

Related documents- No specific documents apply to this error message.

You need to perform an IOS upgrade.

Its looks like an IOS bug to me. I am not sure about a workaround for this, but if you keep getting this message continously , you should consider opening  a case with Cisco TAC.

Usually if the error indicated by a traceback does not cause a reboot it’s just a bug in IOS.

which platform and release have you got ?

Thank you for the reply.  It is a 2801. I don't currently have a Cisco contract but we have three 28xx routers so maybe I can get a slightly newer code of the other router. Thoughts?

You have very old IOS , please Upgrade the IOS.

That will remove this bug.

If still this issue pursue with newer code then u need to raise a TAC case.
