There isn't a purpose as far as i can see, it's just be done that way.
Certainly EIGRP doesn't know or care about which serial interface has been used.

Thanks. Ya know I'm new to Cisco, but just the same, some things are just plain common sense. Sometimes I am a little slow, LOL. If I had looked more carefully at the configuration, I would have seen that the serial cables were criss-crossed to allow for ALL THREE routers to be hooked up and functional.
