Hi,
what is VLAN spanning?
it's a question asked in an interview ,and I answered that extended VLAN is VLAN spanning(i.e. a single VLAN is presented in different switches in a switching environment)
can anybody tell me the answer?

Hi Vasanth,
I usually ask for clarification when asked a question I'm not clear on. This provide me a chance to see if we will be able to communicate, at what comfort level and determine if the position is headed into a snake pit -LOL.
Assuming you did ask for clarification, and the response was related to Cisco Nexus Data Center terminology, I would think you were in the ball park with your answer.
However, if just a general networking question, I would think maybe Cisco remote span sessions to capture traffic remotely.
But again, clarification would really be needed!!!
Hope this helps

So you are telling about port mirror over remote switches,i.e(SPAN and RSPAN)
SPAN--monitoring port and vlan traffic from same physical switch
RSAPN-monitoring traffic from any switch which is present in our network.
am I right,plz correct me?

Hello Vasanth,
If you ask me what you said is right and i would explain stating that a VLAN is a logical broadcast domain that can span over multiple physical LAN segments.
or he would be expecting answer on the baisis of span session of vlan traffic.
So it may be either of the two , the best is when ever you have doubt when you answer ask the interviewer as well in polite manner for learning.
Hope it Helps..

Hello,
It is ambiguous. Besides Ganesh and Frank answers, it might have been Spanning tree per VLAN.

I too agree with all genius and very knowledgeable friends.
It is always good to have the question clarified saying that u did not understood the question or through a ball to his side saying is it span or vlan communication flow between the switches.
Don't think that u need to know all the things what interviewer ask..but be very clear with your basics and confidence in answering what u know and last butt least understand the question I get the things clarified.

If you only answered "that extended VLAN is VLAN spanning", maybe the interviewer thought you confused extended VLAN IDs, those numbered 1006..4094, with VLAN spanning.(?)
What did the interviewer say they thought the correct answer was?

Not very clear question, but PVST or per vlan spanning tree is first thing that come to mind.

"what is VLAN spanning? "
Its an ambiguous question so I would have asked for clarification from the interviewer.
