It's recommended to only install TMS and various TMS extensions on the Windows server. What 3rd party applications were you looking to install? If you do install anything, it would be at your own risk, if it happens to interfere with TMS.
Based on my experience it's possible but needless to say doing so is at your own risk. I would be particularly careful with anything that interferes with Java, .Net and IIS or SQL.
