Weird request from a customer, they would like to use a 3rd party SIP client (X-lite) to connect to a new UCM 7.x. The weird part is they would like to do this from home without having to VPN into the network. I have discussed ASA IP Phone Proxy with them and have pointed out that IP Communicator will work in this fashion but it is not recommended due to rtp not being SRTP with the ASA IP Phone proxy (SRTP is currently only supported for "Hard phones", although SRTP for IP Communicator is on the road map). They are still stuck on this and would like a way to do it with 3rd party SIP client. Session Boarder Controller keeps getting thrown around here, but I am confident that it is not the solution as that product is carrier class ip media management. Do you have any ideas?

The client is also talking to Cablevision who is offering a hosted Cisco solution. Maybe they are recommending the SBC to the client. Is it possible for you to check with one of the Service Provider Engineers? Maybe they leverage the SBC. The Cisco literature does say it is also geared toward Enterprise clients to support VoIP. Just a thought.

My guess is that the third party SIP client is a little more customizable for the user than perhaps CIPC may be. What about using downloadable SSLVPN connectivity as opposed to an installed IPSec client? Would that work for the customer?
