Cisco Presence Configuration

Hi there,

Is there any "Simple" How-to available for the configuration of Cisco Presence? I've read a couple of "long" Cisco configuration guides, but it's seems to complicated. I hope someone can help me regarding this issue.

Thanks.

I think if you look at the guides as "long" you are reading too much into it. Cisco tends to add too much "stuff" to the guides that is repetitive. The guides for CUPS is something you should follow and read through. There are many many steps involved between CUCM and CUPS.

CUCM

Create AXL accounts

Create Ctigw accounts

create sip publish trunks

associate users/phones/lines

Configure devices and lines correctly

LDAP involved?

on CUPS

configure AXL

Configure CTI

Configure User settings

Configure ACL in/out

Configure Phone Control

Configure Gateways

Configure SIP proxy

CUPS is definitely not something easy for starters, but we do not provide easy config guides. if you expect to use provide all the advantages CUPS provide you'll have to start reading the maintain and operate guides.

Hi Java,

First of all, I'm not a starter. I've deployed more than 10 CUCM clusters for our customers. Secondly, I mean that the "way" those guides are written isn't "easy" to read. Most of the time those guides are "long" and difficult to read. I think there are better ways to write guides. Maybe you don't agree with me with, but it's my personal opinion.

Thanks.

I'm an experienced Cisco Admin for more than 15 years and like to say that the CUPS docu is to much complicated and time consuming because it is confusing any way.

The general problem is to have two systems to configure and manage (CUCM and CUPS). Why it is not possible to do more configuration on CUCM or all on CUPS?

Also the SIP trunk port was changed from 6.0 to 7.0 and the field "Enterprise Presence Server Contact Name "in CUPS -> System -> Service Parameters -> UP Presense Engine has been removed in CUPS 7.0 whitout any coment.

Also the menues in CUPS 6 and 7 are different an if you like to do an Upgrade or you have a Production CUPS 6 system and a Test CUPS 7 system you will get confused.

Cisco documents tend to tell you what each menu does. But it doesn't tell you which menus you need to navigate through to accomplish a job. :)

I agree it's inconvenient to configure two systems. Some configuration has to be done on CUCM unless CUPS modifies CUCM database directly. But it'll introduce management and security concerns.

SIP trunk port was changed because developers want to make it look 'normal' (5060). It's because lots of customers complained about the 'non-standard' port (5070) on CUPS 6.0.

'Enterprise Presence Server Contact Name' was removed because it should never have exposed to customers.

Menu change was because they wanted to make it more intuitive. It'll change again in future release. The problem is: GUI team didn't understand the feature clearly. (e.g. 'Meeting Notification' should have been grouped into 'IPPM'). And 'marketing' people kept giving strange ideas. (e.g. Use 'Desk Phone Control' to represent 'MOC').

On CUPC we where not able to see any presence status till I filled in o 'Enterprise Presence Server Contact Name' the correct ip address. i.e.: 10.100.1.15:5060;transport=tcp

I was with the first public CUPS training from FastLane with Richard Bennett (TTA, DVE, CCSI, CCSI AVVID, CCVP ) in London last Dec. and he was not able to help me.

He told us that he has written the training papers. I'tried it with CUPC 1.2. and 7.0. and allways got the error:

DEBUG | 20081030-164543.156 | | RESIP | 6024 | BaseException.cxx:17 | BaseException at \sipfoundry\main\rutil\ParseBuffer.cxx:729 \sipfoundry\main\rutil\ParseBuffer.cxx:729, Parse failed Expected a digit, got: port;transport=tcp> in context: Contact

And there was no inforamation anyway to get. I could only guess. But since the input it runs.

When I upgraded to 7.02 we had the same problem as before so I did a downgrade.

Based on "", it was a misconfiguration of "server contact name" (Due to misleading documentations).

On CUPS 6, you may put that field to blank (System > Service Parameters > Presence Engine).

If you upgrade to CUP 7 without fixing it first, there's no way to fix it from GUI. You'll have to open a TAC case. TAC engineer will need to fix it from root shell.

Oh, I love misleading documentations that costs days of testing and are bringing frustration.

But thank you for your info.

I'll test the blanking of the field in out of busy time. This is not so easy becasue many users are not shutting down their PCs. So they will have to stop and start CUPC.

Michael,

I'm thinking of buying this book, because I'm so confused of all different and uncomplete manuals on cisco.com

Is this book about CUPS 6.0.5 and MOC 2007 standard edition ?

Yes, it covers CUPS 6.x and OCS 2007.

CUPS 7.x changed a lot on GUI (my bad, it was my idea and development loved it), but most of the features remains the same.

Thanks!

Michael

thanks.

OCS 2007 standard and enterprise ?

There's no difference between OCS Enterprise and Standard as far as CUPS/RCC was concerned.

The books was written based on OCS Enterprise Edition though.

Michael

Hi,

Thanks for your tip about this book. I ordered the book and got it two days back. I followed the steps written in this book and it's working now :-)

The book has been written in a very simple way and all options of Presence has been defined including the troubleshooting.

I hope others will try to learn something from the author of this book on who to write simple yet complete configuration and installation guides!

Regards
