CUCM / CUC 12.0 - does changing NTP server mess up licensing

TONY SMITH

Hi,

If I select deletion of the first NTP server from either CUCM Publisher or Unity Connection Publisher, it warns that this will mess up licensing.   Is this really the case now we're on Smart Licensing and even the concept of "re-hosting" has changed?  Exact version is 12.0.1.22900-14

WARNING: Changing this setting will invalidate software license
on this server. The license will have to be re-hosted.

As I say, thought I'd better check first so I've left the first NTP server unchanged for the moment.

Thanks, Tony S

Apparently it is just cosmetic, I tried it my lab and nothing happened, and got confirmation that the message is back from the days where the license MAC was related to the NTP.

Somehow that message is still here from the 8.x days.

AFAIK it shouldn't invalidate anything, probably just a legacy message that is still in the system and should be removed, I got something similar on PCD (can't recall what I was doing) but PCD doesn't even need a license and I got a similar error.

You DO need to make sure that you have a valid NTP configured.

Thanks.  In this case the customer has made changes and the originally configured NTP servers either no longer work, or are no longer accessible from that site.  I've added new references so time synchronisation is re-established (although only at Stratum 5 which I think isn't recommended).   For the moment I'll leave the originally specified first NTP server configured, until I've confirmed we have access to all support information just in case we have to do something with licensing.

I'll try to find info related to that, but that sounds cosmetic, just as it was on PCD.

And yes, stratum 5 is not the recommended option, it should be stratum 1-3

Thanks for confirming, I can go ahead and remove the remaining obsolete NTP reference now.
