How to check PSTN connectivity?

My company fax sometimes can not be called (the fax doesn't give fax sound when called). I check in VG, its port is up, i check in CUCM, it has ip address.
The CUCM connected to the PSTN via Voice Gateway. How to check the connection in PSTN side? Because i think there is no problem in our voice gateway. Is there some kind of "ping" feature in vg fxo to the PSTN?
I'm CCNA R&S but has responsibility in company collaboration, i'm sorry if i miss some basic knowledge in collaboration world.
