Performance impact of unity with 10s of thousands of messages?

Hi,

I have a Unity 4.0.3 SR1 server with about 2300 voice mail users. We have had this system running about a year now. My question is if most of the users never delete their messages, would Unity performance be impacted if there are 10's of thousands of messages setting on the message store.

Regards,

Danny

yes, absolutely. The primary issue is the filtering process when we log into those user's mailboxes is a lot of work with very large inboxes. In 4.0(4) it's a littel better with the pre done search folders that are (mostly) kept up to date in the background so it's not so bad. But you can imagine there is extra work involved (not to mention acres of HD space) taken up with that many messages hanging around.

You should look into using the Message STore Manager tool to help clean up some of this (or at least report who your biggest offenders are). You can get the latest version on its home page here:

Yes, I have looked into using MSM, unfortunately, most of my vm users are hidden accounts and the process time for MSM is unbearable. We have developed a way in exchange to delete vm's older than 14 days and will be turning this on in a few weeks.

curious about something you said here... is MSM performance impacted/disfunctional by hidden GAL users, or were the two comments unrelated?

MSM needs to unhide the users, manage the mailbox, then rehide them. This takes around 1 minute per user to complete.

On the Exchange performence side -- make sure you're running the latest MAPI client side code. For Exchange 2000 install Exchange 2000 SP3 + post-SP3 rollup on Unity and for Exchange 2003 make sure you install Exchange 2003 SP1 on Unity. With 4.0(5) we require these code levels.

Thanks,

Keith
