Server Migration

We are about to migrate from a single combined unity/exchange 4.03 VM server implementation to a new redundant system (same servers 78xx)- twin unity servers plus separate exchange server for VM only.

Couple of issues

- License keys: can we just get the licence reissued and run the old system until the new system is activated.

- Are there any known nasties when exporting the users' announcements ad voicemails for the old to the new system

So your old system will be completely seperate from the new one? In other words they wont ever live in the same forrest/share the same Exchange mailstores?

If that's the case, this should be pretty easy - just use DiRT over to the new environment - you can leave the demo license on there and it will run fine for a while. It'll kick out warnings that you are out of license compliance and you wont be able to add users and the like but it'll run for a while. When you're ready to cut over you can get the license reissued for the new system and you're ready to go.

If these will be in the same AD forrest/mailstore this is a little trickier since users can only be assigned to one and only one Unity server at a time so the cut over and "jump back" is less workable.

Thanks Jeff. To confirm - New system will be in A new domain/subdomain. We may want to integrate with an existing AD forest, but still to be decided as to whether it be a child domain or not. It will also be a new Exchange Server. Whatever the case the new system will be separate from the old system's AD/DNS entries.

Do you mean bring the new system up in demo mode? Is there not a limit as to the functionality and number of users/lines?

yes, there's a limit - however if you do a DiRT restore it will work for a time (several days) before it takes itself off line. It'll log errors into the event log complaining about the system being out of licensing compliance and you wont be able to add new users to the system via the SA and the like but it'll run for you. The only exception to this is features such as Bridge and AMIS - those will not be active on the system no matter what, not even for a limited time, unless they're licensed.
