Unified Communications on Unified Computing

In the anouncement on Monday, Cisco said that they would look at this as a supported platform.  Does the mean that virtualization support is around the corner too? Let me know what you think, we are constantly looking for apps to virtualize and UCM and other UC apps are perfect candidates.

It would be great if they do!!

I have heard from a few other folks directly that would, let's rally the troops!

Customers have been asking Cisco for more choices for both Cisco-provided/supported platforms and customer-provided/supported platforms, including specific hardware configurations, rack vs. blade, Cisco vs. 3rd-party vendor and physical vs. virtual.  All of these variants are being investigated as our customers have good CAPEX/OPEX-driven reasons for wanting them as options to host Cisco Unified Communications products.  Unity on VMWare on 3rd-party hardware is already FCS.  We will update on other products and supported platform options as those become available.

When one considers the form factor of early Cisco routing devices including their NPE/RAM/Backplane, and power consumption, it is interesting to compare and contrast to a modern ISR and the "firepower" they possess.

It isn't a terribly long jump to imagine how Cisco UCS will exploit SMB node devices when that same ISR is also loaded with AXP and virtualized resident applications that are aware, tethered, and coordinated with the service provider core (Cisco UCS).
