Unity 4.04sr1, Deleted Messages / Exchange Question

Unity using exchange 2000 as the message store.... When a user deletes a voicemail in unity it copies it to their deleted items in exchange... On the first storage group (mailbox store) on exchange I have it setup in limits to keep deleted messages for 30 days... however it appears something is not working. There are users with voicemails going back months and months in their deleted items folder which don't seem to be getting removed at the 30 days i've set to retain deleted items...

Users don't know this because we aren't using exchange as our email client yet so they don't actually have outlook or the web client access... its transparent to them, but Im seeing it when I log into their mailbox and the space is dwindling due to all the deleted items being retained and not purging like I've set...

am I missing something here? Since these are all voice messages, does unity put some kind of flag on them that may be interfering?

Unless something has changed since the last time I looked, Exchange 2000 does not remove messages from user's deleted items folder under any circumstances - the deleted items retention you're looking at is very likely the Exchange "dumpster" retention time (i.e. where items you clear from the deleted items folder go when they are deleted). You can actually fish deleted items using tools like ExMerge to go "dumpster diving".

MS has a mailbox manager tool that ships with their admin tools for 2000 that can be setup to sweep messages from deleted items boxes and such - or you can check out the Message Store Manager tool and setup agents/scripts to do this for you - you can check out the MSM tool on its home page here:
