Expand RAID 5 Array on UCSM240 Series 3 LSi Megaraid.

Does anyone know if it is possible to expand a logical disk array (RAID5) that has 3 phys disks + 1 hot spare to 4 phys disks + 1 hot spare, without rebuilding and wiping the data from the array?  This is on a UCS M240 Series 3 with an LSI MegaRAID 9271-8i (SLOT4) storage controller.

thank you in advance

Rich

Greetings.

Ran this through a couple of iterations in the lab this morning.

Documented the steps for 92xx controllers at https://supportforums.cisco.com/document/13208316/expanding-virtual-drive-6gb-sas-controller-adding-additional-physical-drives

Thanks,

Kirk

Hi Rich

Read

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/unified_computing/ucs/c/sw/raid/configuration/guide/RAID_GUIDE.pdf

p99 Creating a New RAID Configuration might be a solution !

However I would be paranoid to do this on a production system; at least I would try it on a test system.

Good luck

Walter.

Thanks Walter will go the safe route and backup move data, copy it back before attempting. Will post what happens (if data disappears etc.) appreciate the links and advice

Greetings.

The megaraid userguide seems to hint at doing this via the 'advanced operations' section for a virtual drive at http://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/td/docs/unified_computing/ucs/3rd-party/lsi/mrsas/userguide/LSI_MR_SAS_SW_UG.pdf (page 148, 149), which is in the raid migration/add drive context.

While I haven't tested these steps on the 92xx controllers via the webbios interface, it appears to be the same context as is used in the 12Gb controllers in the M4 servers (see my previously posted steps for those at https://supportforums.cisco.com/document/13133891/expanding-virtual-drive-12gb-sas-controller-adding-additional-physical-drives)

I'll add this to my growing list of things to try to confirm in the lab.

Any modification of a VD/raid volume is always potentially risky, so having a valid back up of data in case you need to recreate volumes and reinstall is a must :)

Thanks,

Kirk...
