I've installed Cisco IMC Supervisor 2.1 which seems to have flaws in documentation. Cisco documentation for installation contains steps that are not in there (some OVA deployment steps and shell menu). Maybe they were for 1.x but not anymore.
I noticed same for the update process. Nearest I could get was from here http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/unified_computing/ucs/Cisco-IMC-Sup/rel-notes/2-1/b_Cisco_IMC_Supervisor_Release_notes_21.html
Note | Supported transfer protocol types are FTP, HTTP, and Local File System path. You can use the following examples: |
Examples do not contain Local File System path example. I did try multiple variations but it fails because it fails to identify "protocol". I did also login to root and check that the file is there.
I will download the patch and use FTP, but just an thought.. Does anyone know how to do it from local file?

Greetings.
Referencing local file system location should be referenced as file:/// . Think of the file as the protocol like you would http or ftp with http:// only file:// and then with the initial root mount & path appended so file:///opt or file:///tmp
Assuming you have logged in via SSH with shelladmin account, and have the menu #17 to apply patch, you should supply the url that the IMCS update process noted it saved it to (I think it is in /opt).
Applying Patch:
Path URL : file:///opt/patchfilenamexyz.tgz
Thanks,

Thank you Kirk,
That was the correct answer. I think I was missing one / when I typed earlier. Oddly enough it has not been added as example in documentation.
