To be honest, I was curious too, because the error made no sense to me. Unfortunately, I could not find any information. If there is an opportunity to refer this to R&D, I will do so.
@bigevilbeard, it works now! The problem was that I missed to configure "feature nxapi" and "nxapi use-vrf <default/mgmt>".

@bigevilbeard , I don't have access to the collector, but it is reachable from my nexus devices. We use the same collector with IOS-XE devices and it works pretty good with them.
