I have set up a C3750X switch with two VLANs, 10 and 30 with a trunk port to carry both vlans. The trunk port is connected to a 2951 router, with two sub-interfaces defined. Call this R1.

Cheers for all the info. We are getting rid of the ASA 5510 but no timeline yet. The ASA 5510 is not directly connected to the internet. There are other hw/sw firewalls between it and the internet. We have decided not to use the ASA for VPN.
All fixed now. All of a sudden, logging showed "failed to locate next hop for UDP from NP Identity for 65.XX.XX.138. I added a route for it to go to the ISP gateway and it is working now.
