I ran into this too. You do have to include validity_string and it needs to be set to either "valid" or "invalid".

I ended up opening a support case about this but didn't really get an explanation as to why error is appearing for the backup boot image. Copying newer code to the controller moved the active image to the backup boot image slot and made the error go...
