if your dhcp server is not working, or you have no dhcp, the most straightforward way to set the IP is to download a test dhcp server,
tftpd32 http://tftpd32.jounin.net/ pick your OS on the download page, choose the zip or the installer.
You can also use another dhcp server.
-allow tftpd32 in your windows firewall
-set a static address on your pc 192.168.1.20 for example
-in tftpd32 click on settings --> dhcp .
-enter starting address, and size of pool (1 is fine), add any address as the DGateway, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, the rest is not important.
-click OK to the tftpd32 settings. Note you may not have rights to save where tftpd32 is installed (programfiles\tftpd32 I think), so you may have to run tftpd32 as admin or possibly change the folder location.
-plug your ATA into the lan port of the pc, power it on, and check the log in tftpd32 to see what IP address it gets. if your range was one IP, that's pretty easy to figure out.
open the browser on your pc, go to the admin page of the ATA, login and set a static IP.
hope this helps,

Just to note, this post should be assigned to the Voice and Conference>SPA IP Phone Community.

Just to note the SPA122 is ATA Gateway, not SPA IP Phone,
Thus it should be assigned to Voice and Conference->ATAs, Gateways and Accessories instead.

I plugged the ata into a dlink switch - I plugged my computer into a dlink switch and I plugged our network into the dlink switch - I finally wa sable to do an ip scan and get the address then log into that and change it on the cisco site BUT I did 3 of them and now it won't let me do anymore - can't seem to release the ip from our dhcp pool

OK, so it seems not to be SPA112 issue. Your DHCP server just have no IP address to assign to. We know nothing about the DHCP server you are using, so we are unable to help. Reboot of such server may or may not help. Follow DHCP server documentation.
