UC540 SIP Gateway or Proxy?

I'm an end user and not a phone system expert, so I'll apologize up front!

We have a UC540 with SPA525G phones and want to configure it for VOIP calls. The UC540 is on our local network behind our company firewall. Our firewall will need to be configured to allow the traffic and our firewall admin has asked the following question:

1. Does the UC540 act as a SIP Proxy - meaning all traffic goes through the UC540

or

2. Is the UC540 a SIP Gateway - meaning it sets up the call but the audio channel goes direct from the phones to our VOIP provider.

Thanks for the help,

Mike

Hi Mike,

UC540 is a SIP Proxy in this case. It handles all the calls between IP Phones and outside calls toward your SIP provider.

SIP port 5060 TCP and UDP should be allowed on the Firewall to reach UC540.
