Can't launch Cisco Secure Desktop - Path Initialization Failed

I'm trying to  use remote access to get to my corporate org's systems and am having a problem with Java and Cisco Secure Desktop.  I'm running on a Mac (OSX, El Capitan, 10.11.4) with the latest Java (1.8,0_77).   Using a browser (either Firefox or Safari) to access the corp remote access website, I get the following error:

Attempting to use Java for Installation

The Sun Java applet launch encountered an error.

Critical Failure

Path initialization failed in Cisco Secure Desktop.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what this is referring to and how to address it?  I've tried removing Java and installing an older version, but that's easier said than done.

The CSD is nor supported any more:

Especially with new OSX versions, you shouldn't expect that it"ll run without problems. I would say that it's not worth to put much effort in this product any more.
