I've got a PIX 506e (sw ver. , PDM ver. 3.0(1)). I used to be able to access the PIX via the internet with a browser, but now it hangs on "Loading PIX Device Manager. Please wait ..." with the unending flipping of the hour glass. It asks, and accepts the user/password as well as the certificate, but just doesn't finish loading the PDM.
The machine I manage it from has recently been rebuilt (WinXP Pro) due to a less than successful SP2 update.
Does anyone have a suggestion?

java?

You right about needing to install java, but that hasn't gotten me all the way there.
I installed it with administrator rights and tried the PDM again. It goes a bit further asking for login, accepting certificates, but then it hangs with the following error;
"exception: java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.util.PropertyPermission java.version read)."
I turned off windows firewall and tried it as administrator, but to no avail.

I ran into this recently and found a workaround. Go into Explorer -> Tools --> Internet Options --> Advanced --> then unselect "Use JRE ...." under the Java section.
I'd like to know if you find a better option because this seems to affect other browser functions.

Actually, this didn't help my situation. It still hangs on the same error.

Steve,
Here's what I would try:
1) To hopefully fix your java problem, under C:\Documents and Settings\userid delete the .java & .javaws & .jpi_cache directories.
2) To fix the first problem you reported (never-ending hourglass), ensure there is no pop-under asking for the userid/password.

No good. There's no pop-up lingering about. I do get a Hostname Mismatch error. I'm beginning to wonder If I need to access the PIX directly and alter something in there to sync this up.
The Hostname Mismatch error is:
Hostname of the URL: 192.168.1.1
Hostname from the certificate: BASIC-PIX.basic.local +
OID.1.2.840.113549.1.92.2=BASIC-PIX.basic.local
It will continue on, but that's when it hangs on the java exception error.

The Hostname mismatch error shouldn't keep things from loading. Unfortunately Cisco software is very particular about what version of Java Virtual Machine you have running.
So try this, remove all traces of Java from your system, this includes uninstalling whatever version you installed, plus the directories I provided in the previous link.
Then hit this site and allow it to load an original version of Microsoft's Java VM. I've used this method on my Gentoo Linux laptop w/Crossover Office & IE6 and it works perfectly.

We actually opened a TAC case on this because others in my group couldn't manage our pix also. TAC said we must download this exact Java version 1.42_07.
It worked for my coworker. I have not tried it yet.
Hope this helps...

This was the ticket. I tried the latest version (1.4.2_08) to no avail. Then I uninstalled it and located the previous version 1.4.2_07. After installing it, everything is back to working.
Thanks!

Hi Steve,
This looks like a Java problem to me. Nothing to do with your PIX or PDM. They seem to be perfectly alright. If there was any problem, you should not have got the PDM page on your browser. But still, would it be possible for me to look at PDM config part in your PIX config??
Coming to Java, http://www.siteforum.com/servlets/sfs;jsessionid=F2076F8A1ECA9AB02E001FF94B64B6FA?s=pV8lvYbjATsDTO8f&&t=/Default/gateway&i=1064938378737&b=1064938378737&application=story&l=0&active=no&ParentID=1106567881120&StoryID=1106568581712&ref=google mihgt be of some help to you. If you can, take another PC or LAPTOP with no anti virus or pop up blockers (i mean a newly installed PC) and install just Java. Try this and this actually narrows down the problem.
I believe you will have this documentation. but still you can refer to the sublinks in configuring PDM section
