Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility client is reporting that the VPN client driver encountered an error. Please restart your computer or device, then try again.
This is on a Windows 7 Home Premium x64 machine. Cisco AnyConnect was working fine 3-4 weeks back, but then, after what I believe was a Microsoft update, stopped working. I've been working on this issue for 3 weeks by trying different versions of AnyConnect (currently on version 3.1.07021), but the result is identical. Just as it gets ready to establish a VPN connection, a window pops up telling me the VPN client driver encountered an error. I've tried different network cards (wired and wireless), but there is no difference in the behavior. I cannot establish a VPN connection anymore.
I've had my company's IT department attempt different solutions to this problem, but to no avail. Something is preventing AnyConnect client from establishing a VPN connection.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Gene,
Have you tried the fix stated in this Cisco document? http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/security/asa-5500-x-series-next-generation-firewalls/100597-technote-anyconnect-00.html#anc37
A couple of results also came up on a Google search:

Hi Adeolu,
Thanks a lot for your response. I've run through all the suggestions on the Cisco site, as well as what Google found relating to my VPN error condition. None of them helped. I then uninstalled Microsoft Security Essentials, but could not reinstall it. There's something amiss with my PC. I worked on that issue up to last weekend, where I decided I can't waste any more time on that issue, and attempted to restore my system from a saved image on my external backup drive from mid-January.
I was shocked to find that, while the restore indicated the process succeeded, when I attempted to reboot my computer, it came back with an error to the effect that the system did not boot successfully last time, would I like to repair the system, or boot windows normally. To make a long story short, neither options worked. I spent a bunch of time trying to restore the boot manager and master boot record, but nothing worked. The partition was set to bootable/active...
As a side note, I suspected I may have a hardware failure of some sort. I swapped out memories, hard drives and DVD drives, but the result was always the same. The system image appeared to reinstall the Windows partition, but it still would not boot from that drive.
I've given up and am in the process of restoring Windows from scratch. I didn't want to go that route due to all the time it's going to consume (updates, installing software, eventually reinstalling Cisco AnyConnect client), but there's a limit to how much time I can spend on such things.
The main lesson I learned from all this is don't trust the Microsoft System Image backup as a reliable way to restore the computer after something bad happens. There's a really good chance when you need it, it won't work. I'm going to use Ghost 32 to create reliable system images in the future.
Thanks again.

Thank you Gene, I think you are right, as it works fine on another PC (also win 7 64bit)
Unfortunately I can not return the laptop easiely as I have already installed some software on it. Of course I have a out-of-the-box backup I have to think about it.
One think I could try is, to restore an WIN 7 Image with Acronis (universial restore), from my PC which works fine. If then it does not work again, then your are right and I am sure that my Laptop is scrap!
Thanks YOU! Best

I have search the internet with google and found not a successful solution.
I also tried a different ISP with WLAN - no change.
Can anyone here tell me what I can do more? I do not want to re-install the whole win 7.
The win 7 sys is 2 weeks old and updated with the latest drivers. The win 7 64bi was pre-installed and never used before. It is new out of the box.
Thanks

Hi Walter,
I had a similar problem and spent over a month trying to determine what is causing the issue with Cisco. I went through multiple OS re-installs, but it seemed that when MS updates were installed, Cisco AnyConnect Client would stop working. I found a bunch of recommendations online about disabling certain MS updates, but the issue kept coming up within days of a fresh install.
I found that I could check the health of my system by running:
sfc -scannow
in an administrator command prompt window. What I discovered is my system was very slowly corrupting the hard drive. I tried a bunch of different things (new bios, new hard drive, fresh installs of different versions of Win7). No matter what I did, the hard drive corruptions kept coming back. I ran a bunch of system tests (memory tests, hard drive tests, peripheral tests, etc.) but everything indicated my system was working fine.
Unfortunately I ended up getting a different PC, and all the issues went away. I don't know what was the incompatibility in the hardware on the motherboard (or component failure), but some files that Cisco used were especially susceptible to the corruption. Please run the sfc scan on your system. That's a great indicator if you're experiencing the same failure that I was. If a few files are starting to get corrupted after a day or two, don't waste anymore of your time with your computer. Get another one.
I got a used PC for next to nothing. Did a Win7 install, and kept checking the system with sfc. No issues for about half a year.
Good luck. - Gene

I found the solution:
I had to reinstall WIN 7 from an other PC with Acronis TI Universial REstore and bought a new WIN 7 KEy. After that I did delete all Adapters for the NIC and installed the drivers again.
Then I did a new fresh install of the Anyconnect and - thansk God - it works now.
Moreover it is good to know that if you use also the Checkpoint SSL VPN and the Cisco Anyconnect, please install first Anyconnect and then the Checkpoint SSL-VPN.
If you do it the other way round, It have again problems.
best
