my understanding is that the 3.1 code will allow for both transparent mode and routed mode on the same module. what are the caveats to this and how would failover work? I am looking for examples online and found nothing.

In 3.1 you will be able to mix contexts in transparent and routing mode. In FWSM 3.1 you will be able

to use bridge-groups, which comprise several interfaces at the same time. FWSM uses the

classifier to determine to what context it must send a packet, and if the same VLAN is used it would have to

use the IP address. Since the FWSM in transparent mode does not support statics/xlates, and the outside

VLAN would be the same for all contexts, the FWSM will be unable to determine what context to send a packet.
