Hello All,
I will try an make this short and precise. I have no experience setting up a vpn connection pointed outside of my house. Actually I have only set it up on packet tracer. I have a 1941 Cisco router and a 2690 cisco switch. The router does have the security license for vpn. How does one get started on the process? My ISP is X

What device does your friend have?
The Cisco 1941 supports Policy Based and Route Based VPN, with Route Based VPN considered the preferred Cisco way of implementing VPNs.
A Route Based VPN on a Cisco router uses FlexVPN. For a VPN between 2 peers you'll setup a Static VTI.

I don't think the 1941 would allow you to set up any VPN if it doesn't have the security license.
