Mac Lion and Cisco VPN client problems

I just installed Lion 10.7 on my iMac and can no longer use the downloaded Cisco VPN client to connect to Microsoft Remote Desktop and access the PC in my company's office. When I try to launch the VPN client I get Error 51. I used to be able to enter a command in the Terminal as a workaround to use the VPN client when that happened, but that no longer works. I have tried booting into 32-bit mode; doesn't work. I tried to use the Cisco client built into Lion using settings provided by my company. When I try to connect I get the following message: "The negotiation with the VPN server failed. Verify the server address and try reconnecting."

I have searched the web looking for a solution. My company's tech department is stumped; the Apple Geniuses haven't been able to help. Does anyone have any ideas how I can use either the downloaded Cisco VPN client or the client built into Lion?

Make sure you configure the attributes correctly.

Secondly the inbuilt VPN client code of Lion is made in collaboration with Cisco so there will not be any issues of compatibility.

Thank you for your reply Rohan. I actually used this site to set up the built-in VPN. My IT department gave me the settings and checked them afterward. But when I try to connect I get the aforementioned error message. That why I am so puzzled. Everything seems correct, yet it doesn't work. I would welcome any other suggestions.

Try connecting using  AnyConnect 3.0.3050:

This is the latest version in the Anyconnect family and supports Lion 10.7. Here is the release note which you can refer before installing,

Make sure to uninstall all previous versions and temporary files before installing this.

Agreed with the solution above. We have deployed this to all our Lion machines that could not install the 2050 build and this worked great.

I am just an employee and not an administrator or an IT guy, so apparently I can't download AnyConnect from the Cisco site. I asked my IT department last week if I could try it, and they said no - that we only use the Cisco VPN client they provided for me (which isn't working for me). I will approach them again, because this could be the solution. Thanks.

Keep getting the following error with AnyConnect on Mac Lion:

The VPN agent service is not responding.  Please restart this application after a minute.

Anybody know how to fix this?

Hi Ira,

Problem with Cisco VPN client on MAC Lion is a known issue. If you cannot use the Anyconnect client then go ahead to use the inbuilt VPN client feature of the LION which is also developed in co-ordination of the CISCO. Here is the link which you can refer

That error you are seeing when attempting to connect with the built-in VPN client is caused by not entering a username before hitting the connect button. Try typing something in the username box and see if that allows you to connect.
