VPN and ADSL - how to organise?

Hello,

We are in the process of moving from a peer to peer network to using a Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 LAN server which will be connected to the Internet using a BT provided modem/router...we are not able to change the router as I understand matters...

The PCs on the network access a ticket booking system using a PC which has a modem - not at all clear how we set up the network when the ticket booking company offer (soon) VPN access.

The LAN server will be attached directly to the 4 port ADSL modem/router - the ticket booking company is saying that they can only provide a CISCO router -so will this sit between the ADSL modem/router and the switch for the network??

Any pointers please!

You can set the Cisco router inside your BT provided modem/router. It will then be the gateway for your network and hand all Internet traffic off to BT. You should then be able to terminate the vendors VPN on the Cisco router AND you can utilize Cisco’s firewalling capabilities on that router (since you didn’t mention a firewall in your design). Another thing would be to set a PIX 500 series firewall inside the BT Router and have your vendor terminate their VPN to that.

Thanks for your reply - the idea at the moment is to use the firewall (ISA server) which comes with the MS SBS 2000 software....perhaps using the CISCO router firewall is better? Or can you use both?!
