VPN client with MS Distributed File System

We have a customer with a Windows 2003 AD domain that has implemented Distributed File System (DFS). File share references in this environement look like \\name.local\share where name.local is the DNS Doamin Name. With a VPN session, these references sometimes work and sometimes don't. Old style reference like \\server\share always work. Has anyone seen a similar problem and solved it?

software versions:

VPN 3000 running 4.1.6

VPN client running Windows XP and 4.0.4(D)

Since the problem occurs occasionally during the use of Domain names, it can be due to the name resolution problem or some connectivity problem with the DNS server.
