There are pros and cons to everything we do. The negative associated with outsourcing VPN is more perceived than real. It is loss of control. The feeling is "If I outsource, I no longer have control over my own destiny". I say this is a preceived negative because the provider managing your VPN is actually an extension of your staff. You define the requirements and access policies. You define the connectivity needed, adds-moves-changes. You define user authentication. You manage the manager.
Benefits:
Reduce the time spent on mundane monitoring tasks, updates, report generation.
Faster solution roll-out.
Lower cost management
You may be able to reduce your investment in communications gear...some providers will bundle the VPN equipment into the monthly management cost.
Reduced finger-pointing
Access to provider's expertise.
24X7 management
More time to focus on the business
