I have 2 cisco 826 routers which make a des vpn tunnel. Both sides have a dsl connection of 1024/1024kb. When I copy data from one location to another over this vpn link, then the bandwidth seems to be 50% or 60% of this 1024kb. Is there a way to speed this vpn connection or are the cisco 826 routers too slow for 1024kb vpn tunnel?

DSL bandwidth is very often contended. That is to say that whilst the maximum bandwidth available to you is 1Mbps it may be shared between you and a number of other sites. Their usage will affect the bandwidth available to you at any one time. You should check with your ISP about the service on your line.
The 800 series routers are more than capable of operating of a 1Mbps link but you speed will be affected by the number of packets being encrypted and decrypted as well as the other Internet traffic running through the router.
You can check how stretched the router is by monitoring the memory and CPU usage.
I hope this helps.

what program/os/protocol are you using to copy the files? if it is from two windows machines, don't be surprised - you can get wildly varying performance due to simpy weird behaviour.
