Why my wifi internet status changes to no internet, secured when I connect VPN?

So, I posted below question on Microsoft page and the person replied stating when I connect VPN it provides me internet access, which explains the behavior of Windows I have shown in the link below. Now, I was under the impression that you have to have Internet first in order to use VPN. So, now I am sort of lost. Can anyone help me understand behavior of Windows after I connect VPN using Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client version 4 as shown on the link below and help me understand it?

So you get confused by the changed Icon? Here is what happens:

  1. You have your working WiFi internet-connection.
  2. The AnyConnect-Client builds a secure tunnel to the VPN gateway.
  3. AnyConnect activates a virtual network-interface and routes all traffic through this new interface. This is the new icon in your tray. Think of a long virtual cable to the VPN-Gateway.
  4. As all traffic is now sent through this new connection, Windows shows that internet is available here, but not on the wireless network.

You are right that you need internet access to establish the VPN. But the moment the VPN establishes, all your traffic is under control of the VPN-gateway and can restrict or allow your traffic to the internet. Ask the Admin of the VPN-gateway about the  applied policy.

Thanks for reply. If you could look my post on Microsoft page as well. I would appreciate that has screenshots of my questions and answers I am looking for and what caused confusion in my mind about Internet and VPN.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks. You explained it in a very easy to understand way.
