Windows 8 on Lenovo Tablet 2 Cisco VPN Client Error 440

Hi,

I am testing a Lenovo Tablet 2 that we would like to use for our Sales staff. The only problem is when I try to use the VPN Client it gives me the following error. The operating system is Windows 8 Pro 32bit (Not RT) and the Cisco VPN Client is 5.0.07.0410.

Secure VPN Connection terminated locally by Client

Reason 440: Driver Failure

The registry edit for the vpn client on our Windows 8 laptops does apply to this issue as Windows 8 is NOT 64bit in this case:

1. Open Regedit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\CVirtA

2. Edit "DisplayName" to say "Cisco Systems VPN Adapter for 64-bit Windows" from "@oem18.inf,%CVirtA_Desc%;Cisco Systems VPN Adapter for 64-bit Windows"

I have tried the winfix.exe and the dne update located in the link below but it does not resolve the issue:

I have also tried to disable digital driver signature enforcement using the 2 methods below but they does not resolve the issue as well:

1. Start --->> Run ---> GPEdit.msc

2. Enable and Ignore Code signing for drivers policy under User Configuration --->>

    Administrative Templates ---->> System ---->> Driver Installation --->> Code signing for drivers

or this method

1. Open Admin CMD prompt.

2. Enter "bcdedit -set loadoptions DISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS"

3. Enter "bcdedit -set TESTSIGNING ON"

I get an error on step 3.

I have also tried various compatability mode settings installing and running the client but still I get Error 440.

Anyone out there have any other idea regarding this issue as I have hit a wall on this one? Would be nice to get this working as I see other people have posted about this same Error 440 with the Cisco Client when using Window 8 on a tablet.

Hi,

The old IPsec VPN Client doesnt really support anything newer than Windows 7 to my understanding.

You would be better of moving into Cisco Secure Mobility Client which officially has support for Windows 8

I havent been dealing with Cisco VPN Client that much lately but to my understanding the Cisco VPN Client has been a "bad" choice for a long time already as its supports is ending in the near future.

Hello,

confirming what Jouni mentioned, the Cisco IPSec VPN client is not supported on Windows 8, and it will not be supported actually. the alternative is using Cisco Anyconnect VPN client that uses SSLVPN (or IKEv2 if you want) instead of IPSec IKEv1.

Hi Guys. finally I found the Solutions!!! Just Disable the Secure boot from BIOS and Install the Cisco VPN and it should works. I've tried it and it works. My Tablet 2 is Windows 8 32bit an cisco VPN 5.0.07.410

Hello Fredy,

great it is working fine with you now. however, please note that this is still a non supported setup by Cisco, which means, if you face any issue with it in the future, the answer will always be that this is not supported and that you should use Cisco Anyconnect Secure Mobility Client as it is the supported VPN client with Windows 8.

Just want to say thanks for the tip, Fredy.  Worked just as you said.  In fact, I had installed VPN Client before reading your post and found that I did not have to uninstall/reinstall the software.  Once working, if I switched the BIOS setting back, it stopped working.  And reapplying your tip, it works again.  crb

I have sold this problem too, in desabling security boot option in the bios setings.

Version of CISCO client VPN : 5.0.07.0410

Now i have a 429 error due to dns not responding.

I will see and bring back the issue to this post or another...
