Has anyone heard of any effort to auto-archive or auto-close WebEx team spaces? I easily have over 1000+ spaces. There should be some kind of clean up routine that does this on a weekly basis for spaces that have no activity for X amount of time.

Archiving spaces is only available for spaces that are part of a team. 1:1 spaces or group spaces that are not part of a team can just be deleted. Both can be done via the API https://developer.webex.com/docs/api/v1/rooms/delete-a-room
You may also update a space membership to hide a direct space via https://developer.webex.com/docs/api/v1/memberships/update-a-membership
AFAIK, there is no automatism to do it, you'd have to build an application for that on your own. Feel also free to search for such an idea or to post a new one at https://ciscocollabcustomer.ideas.aha.io/. Those ideas will be taken care of for future improvements.

The organization retention policy is a form of automation, I suppose. The practical reality is that Webex messaging was modeled after the iMessage era of consumer chat apps. Older conversations are expected to drift down the list out-of-sight/mind yet still available if you want to reference it later or resume the discussion. There is a whole generation of users now that grew up in that world vs. the ephemeral instant messaging era of Jabber/AIM/YIM.
