Introduction

Dhiresh Yadav is a wireless expert and working for the Cisco's High Touch Technical Support (HTTS) team, a team that provides reactive technical support to majority of Cisco’s premium customers. In this document Dhiresh explained various licenses available with each MSE version and how they differ in their name and purpose when the MSE image version changes.

Overview of MSE Licenses

There are basically three types of MSE services licenses:

  1. Base Location license
  2. CMX license (Advanced Location)
  3. wIPS license

Apart from this ,there are few other licenses for some other purposes with the major being :

  • Activation licenses to activate the Virtual appliance based MSE.
  • Evaluation license to run Physical/Virtual MSE in evaluation mode for certain number of days with certain AP limit.

Pre 7.4 image version

  • Location License: It is called Context aware license (CAS) and is based on the number of end elements tracked.`This license is used for device endpoint tracking, and for calculation of coordinates of a tracked device.
  • CMX License: Doesn't exist.
  • WIPS License: Wireless threat detection and mitigation. This can  further be specific to Monitor mode AP or Enhanced local mode Ap and license SKU is different for both the types.
  • Activation License: Each MSE virtual appliance instance requires an MSE Virtual Appliance activation license (L-MSE-7.0-K9). No activation license is required for the physical MSE appliance.You must activate the virtual appliance using a virtual appliance activation license if you plan to deploy permanent services licenses or use features like High Availability (HA).
  • Evaluation license: By default both the physical and virtual MSE ship with evaluation licenses.

At 7.4 image version

  • Location license: It is called Location services license only and is based on the number of APs.This license is used for device endpoint tracking, and for calulation of coordinates of a tracked device.Format (Part number) of this license is L-LS-100AP
  • CMX License: It is called Advanced Location Services license and is based on number of APs.
  • WIPS License: Wireless threat detection and mitigation .Same as Pre 7.4.
  • Activation License: Each MSE virtual appliance instance requires an MSE Virtual Appliance activation license (L-MSE-7.0-K9). No activation license is required for the physical MSE appliance.You must activate the virtual appliance using a virtual appliance activation license if you plan to deploy permanent services licenses or use features like High Availability (HA).
  • Evaluation license: By default both the physical and virtual MSE ship with evaluation licenses.

Post 7.4 image version

  • Location license: It is called Base location services license and is based on the number of APs.This license is used for device endpoint tracking, and for calculation of coordinates of a tracked device.
  • CMX License: It is called CMX license and is based on the number of APs.It supports CMX Analytics ,CMX Connect ,CMX for Facebook Wi-Fi and Mobile Concierge. This license also includes the Base Location license features used for device tracking along with the above mentioned features.The part number format of this license is L-AD-LS-100AP.
  • WIPS License: Wireless threat detection and mitigation .Same as Pre 7.4.
  • Activation License: Each MSE virtual appliance instance requires an MSE Virtual Appliance activation license (L-MSE-7.0-K9). No activation license is required for the physical MSE appliance.You must activate the virtual appliance using a virtual appliance activation license if you plan to deploy permanent service licenses or use features like High Availability (HA).
  • Evaluation license:By default both the physical and virtual MSE ship with evaluation licenses.
