I'm new to cisco wireless controllers. I have a new 5520 I'm setting up and I need help setting it up. We have a cisco virtual controller already, is it possible to back it up and use the setup for my 5520? Or do I have to do a complete new setup ?

It is not possible to back up and restore as it is. Note that 5520 min require 8.1.x code and check the compatibility of existing AP prior to migrating them to 5520. Here is the link to compatibility matrix.

I would do basic 5520 configure from fresh and rest of the configuration to match with vWLC GUI.
Refer below deployment guide to get this 5520 up
