SSID Reset to default

Rafael_Cabrera

I hope we have soon a feature that lets admins reset an SSID to its default settings with one click. Right now, we have to manually undo every setting, which takes time and can lead to mistakes.

Saves Time: Quickly resets an SSID without needing to change settings one by one.

Reduces Errors: Ensures all settings are properly reset without missing anything.

Easier Troubleshooting: Simplifies testing and fixes by quickly reverting to defaults, rather than choosing the next one.

Improves Workflow: Especially useful for large networks with many SSIDs.

Streamline API Deployments: API deployments and Redeployments to have consistence across all SSIDs in all networks.

This would make managing, deploy and troubleshooting SSIDs much faster and easier. I’d appreciate to hear thoughts from the community and the Meraki team.

Hi @Rafael_Cabrera - I just have to ask why?

Why are you having to reset SSIDs so often it’s become an admin overhead?

Thanks for your reply.

We have two main situations we’re dealing with:

  1. Consistency Across All Existing and New Sites
Our organization has multiple existing networks, and the SSIDs are currently assigned in different positions (from 1 to 15) across different locations. We want to standardize the SSID numbering across all sites. The goal is to reset the existing SSIDs and redeploy them in the correct order, so all networks follow a consistent SSID structure moving forward.

  2. Temporary SSIDs for Events
Throughout the year, we host multiple events and provide temporary Wi-Fi for clients. These temporary SSIDs are often customized to meet the unique needs of each client. After each event, we’d like to reset the SSID so the same position can be used for the next event or client.

Hope this helps clarify our needs!

I would like to be able to reset an SSID to factory defaults. It is just nice to be able to be sure that all of the settings are removed and "clean".

I would probably only use this feature 1 or 2 times a year.

Hi @Rafael_Cabrera,

Regarding "Consistency Across All Existing and New Sites", although I'm not fully aware of your deployment goals, I believe you can use templates to achieve this. It will allow you to have consistent wireless settings across multiple sites, with some level of flexibility per each site. You can see "Local Overrides" section in the linked KB to see what settings can be overriden in networks bound to the template.

When it comes to the feature itself, you can submit a feature request. This KB outlines the process of making a with. Any wish that is made, will be brought to the attention of Product Managers and Development Teams. These wishes are taken into consideration and are used to help shape our product roadmaps. The most wished-for items are incorporated into product development.

In the meantime, you can consider writing up a script using API to try and automate SSID configuration. I believe this API call may be helpful.

Before I reinvent the wheel, don't suppose anyone has come up with a script for this since last year?

I have a client who has literally programmed an ssid in all 15 slots across every site they have. They are not all in use at every site so I have open slots available for our standardization and ISE project but need to default them before I script in the new settings.

So I had an idea and it appears to work, if you create a blank network, you can config sync it's blank settings to your configured but unused ssid. You have to temporarily split combined networks to do this so caveats are client tracking data could get temporarily screwy if you are using UCI but for my purposes this will work.

Very clever.

I would definitely support this feature.
I have like 20 networks with a huge amount of old unused ssid's and we also have some events in different sites during the year where we create custom SSID's for 2-3 days and after that it would be much easier to simply 'reset' them.
