 - It is always recommended to use the latest gold-starred release for your 5508. Sometimes newer ap-models may require later code too.  Usually newer version fixes a lot of bugs.

Hi there,

The release you are using is one of the suggested releases for the platform. You will need to look at the release notes for the other three suggested releases and weigh up the new software features each one brings against its compatibility with older Access-Point models.

cheers,

Seb.

For you reference the TAC recommended software versions is here:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wireless/wireless-lan-controller-software/200046-tac-recommended-aireos.html

You will need to confirm software compatibility with your WLC and APs:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/compatibility/matrix/compatibility-matrix.html

Recommend to bookmark both of these for future reference when deciding on an upgrade.

Regarding should you upgrade, whilst it is always recommended to upgrade to one of the latest versions you need to also determine:

  • Is there a new feature set you require that current version does not support
  • are you requiring new version to support newer APs
  • are you hitting a bug requiring you to upgrade
  • will you APs/ WLC support the upgrade

Thank you so much for your reply. I can see there are four latest version, 8.5- 8.2- 8.3- and 8.0-. My version 8.0- is latest one. What is main difference among them?

A quick scan of the release notes shows no new major software features, but some resolved caveats. Probably the biggest headline which may effect your deployment is the dropping of support for older APs:

  • Cisco Aironet 1560 Series Access Points

  • Cisco Aironet 1570 Series Access Points

  • Cisco Industrial Wireless 3700 Series Access Points

cheers,

Seb.

Thank you!
