Why is a Bridges Range greater than Access point

I read a Ciso presentation which stated that a 802.11 bridge could range 25 miles at 1 Mbs, but at access point could only go 1 mile at any data rate. Why is this if the power output is the same? Is this just based on the assumption that you would use a high gain antenna for the bridge?

The 802.11B standard calls for 1 mile max range. In order to be compliant, the access points use timing that limits them to 1 mile. the bridges have the timing modified in order to gain extra distance. This makes the bridges technically out of compliance with the standard.
