Route-profol types on Cisco ACI

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to comprehend the distinction between the two types of Route Profile configurations within the L3 configuration of a Bridge Domain. I came across some information, but it's still not entirely clear to me. If anyone could provide additional details along with some use cases, I would greatly appreciate it.

"You will have the option to choose between "Match Prefix and Routing Policy" and "Match Routing Policy Only". These options will take affect depending on what level the route-profile is applied to. Generally speaking though "Match Prefix and Routing Policy" defines the profile as 'combinable'. This means that every match rule that is defined will implicitly include the BD subnets that are set to 'advertise externally' and anything else that is explicitly matched by the match rule. "Match Routing Policy Only" makes the route-profile 'non-combinable'. This means that the profile will only match what is explicitly matched by the match rules. BD subnets are not implicity included. "

When you are configuring the Route-Profile you will get these two options.

Match Prefix AND Routing Policy — This option will match the configured prefix from the component where the Route-Profile is associate with.

The other option Match Routing Policy Only — will only match the criteria as defined into the Route-Policy and will ignore if any prefix define under the component where the Route-profile is associated.

For example, if the Route Profile is associated in the export direction to an L3Out EPG that has L3Out subnets 10.0.0.0/8 and 20.0.0.0/8 with an “Export Route Control Subnet” scope, with "Match Prefix AND Routing Policy" option, the match clause of each internal route-map sequence on a leaf will have the match criteria of the prefixes from the associated component (10.0.0.0/8 and 20.0.0.0/8) AND from each Context Policy in the Route-Profile.

However with "Match Routing Policy Only" option selected, the APIC will ignore 10.0.0.0/8 and 20.0.0.0/8 and overwrite the internal route-map sequences for them with a new route map using the match criteria from the context policy in the Route Profile only.
