This actually happens on 9300 switches and does not seem to happen on my 9500 switches.  The issue also exists on 17.1.1 code.

Also exists on 9400 16.12.2

cisco C9407R
001109: Feb 14 16:17:53.105 MET: %SMART_LIC-3-COMM_FAILED: Communications failure with the Cisco Smart Software Manager (CSSM) : Fail to parse response data from SCH server.

I can confirm the behavior described within the bugID.

Does this have any consequence except cosmetically?

License Authorization:
Status: AUTHORIZED on Feb 18 18:25:41 2020 CET
Last Communication Attempt: FAILED on Feb 18 18:25:41 2020 CET
Failure reason: Fail to parse response data from SCH server.
Next Communication Attempt: Mar 19 17:05:16 2020 CET
Communication Deadline: May 18 17:02:15 2020 CET

Well, yours is a bit different from mine. I did not have "Last Communication Attempt: FAILED ". Although I had " Fail to parse response data from SCH server.", my communication attempt was successfull. You shoud fix this until May 18th, otherwise you logging will face a lot of license warnings. Open TAC Case if you dont feel comfortable with this.

I see. But I have the exact same smart-license config on other switches running 16.9 which don't give me these errors.

same on

- C9800 WLC (16.12.1s)

- C9300 16.12.2t

if your get close to the Communication Deadline, try the following command

"license smart renew auth"

License Authorization:
Status: AUTHORIZED on Mar 19 09:12:46 2020 UTC
Last Communication Attempt: FAILED on Mar 19 09:12:46 2020 UTC
Failure reason: Fail to parse response data from SCH server.
Next Communication Attempt: Apr 18 05:14:21 2020 UTC
Communication Deadline: Jun 17 05:12:20 2020 UTC

license smart renew auth

License Authorization:
Status: AUTHORIZED on Mar 19 10:21:32 2020 UTC
Last Communication Attempt: SUCCEEDED on Mar 19 10:21:32 2020 UTC
Next Communication Attempt: Apr 18 10:21:31 2020 UTC
Communication Deadline: Jun 17 10:18:30 2020 UTC

does not fix the problem but you get some more time to wait for a bug fix

CSSM on-prem version 8-202004  (23th May) fixed the problem in my network

Hello,

Error might be becuse of the generated PKI for call home.

wenn you register a new Product Switch/WLC generate a new key.

 %CRYPTO_ENGINE-5-KEY_ADDITION: A key named SLA-KeyPair has been generated or imported by crypto-engine
Apr 20 08:40:19.452: %PKI-4-NOCONFIGAUTOSAVE: Configuration was modified. Issue "write memory" to save new IOS PKI configuration

i have  2x Switch stacked and runing IOSXE 16.12.02.

try this:

(config)#crypto pki trustpoint SLA-TrustPoint
(ca-trustpoint)#revocation-check none

and then :

Switch#license smart renew auth

in my case it worked

License Authorization:
Status: AUTHORIZED on Apr 20 10:50:18 2020 vie
Last Communication Attempt: SUCCEEDED on Apr 20 10:50:18 2020 vie
Next Communication Attempt: May 20 10:50:18 2020 vie
Communication Deadline: Jul 19 10:48:17 2020 vie

same on Catalyst 9300 16.12.3.

We already configured "revocation-check none" before configuring smart licensing but error message still appears.

%SMART_LIC-3-COMM_FAILED: Communications failure with the Cisco Smart Software Manager (CSSM) : Fail to parse response data from SCH server.

switch# sh license summary

<snip>

License Authorization:
Status: AUTHORIZED
Last Communication Attempt: FAILED
Next Communication Attempt: May 27 12:25:25 2020 MESZ

<snip>

Configuring "license smart renew auth" solves the problem:

switch# sh license summary

<snip>

License Authorization:
Status: AUTHORIZED
Last Communication Attempt: SUCCEEDED
Next Communication Attempt: May 27 14:54:48 2020 MESZ

<snip>

Don't know until now if next attempt will fail again.

Best

Thorsten Steffen

Hi all

We are experiencing the same issue after upgrading from 16.12.3a to 17.3.3 on 9300-24T + 9300-24P stacks. We are using on-prem CSSM and everything worked fine prior to the update. I've tried some of the suggestion from this thread with no luck. Switch always comes back with a

%SMART_LIC-3-COMM_FAILED: Communications failure with the Cisco Smart Software Manager (CSSM) : Fail to parse response data from SCH server.

same problem, any solutions for it?

I think you should opt for the solution provided by HOLGER, upgrading the on-prem CSSM, which relates to the bug CSCvs78591

already upgraded to Version 8-202102.. but still the same issue

we got the same problem as well,

we have upgraded to CSSM to 8-202105
