Catalyst and Cisco DNA Software Subscription Matrix for Switching

Hello,

I was hoping to get some clarification with respect to the Cisco DNA subscrption licensing. Specifically, the matrix (see below), shows the with the "Network Essentials", L3 Route Access is supported. Does that mean that with this type of licesning, L3 and routing is supported and dynamic routing (EIGPR), Static, and L3 VLAN are supported?

https://www.cisco.com/c/m/en_us/products/software/dna-subscription-switching/en-sw-sub-matrix-switching.html

Thanks in advance.

Hello @ZK916

Yes, I can help clarify this for you. Based on the Cisco DNA subscription licensing matrix, the "Network Essentials" tier does indeed support Layer 3 (L3) routing access. However, it's important to understand what is included in "L3 Route Access" under the "Network Essentials" license.

What "L3 Route Access" Includes in Network Essentials:

  1. Static Routing: This is supported under the "Network Essentials" license. Static routing allows you to manually configure routes in the routing table.
  2. Layer 3 VLANs (Inter-VLAN Routing): This is also supported. Inter-VLAN routing allows communication between different VLANs on the same switch or across switches.
  3. Dynamic Routing Protocols:
    • EIGRP (Stub): The "Network Essentials" license supports EIGRP in stub mode only. This means the device can participate in EIGRP as a stub router, which is typically used in smaller or simpler network designs.
    • Other Dynamic Routing Protocols (e.g., OSPF, BGP): These are not supported under "Network Essentials." For full dynamic routing protocol support, you would need to upgrade to the "Network Advantage" license.

Summary of Routing Features in Network Essentials:

  • Supported:
    • Static Routing
    • Layer 3 VLANs (Inter-VLAN Routing)
    • EIGRP (Stub mode only)
  • Not Supported:
    • Full EIGRP (non-stub mode)
    • OSPF
    • BGP
    • Advanced routing features (e.g., Policy-Based Routing, VRF-Lite)

If your network requires full dynamic routing protocol support (e.g., full EIGRP, OSPF, or BGP), you would need to consider the "Network Advantage" license instead of "Network Essentials."

For the most accurate and up-to-date information, I recommend reviewing the Cisco DNA subscription matrix directly on the Cisco website (the link you provided) or consulting with a Cisco representative.

Hello @ZK916 ,

one little amendment to what @AshSe described - the L3 routed access in Network Essentials provides the following dynamic protocols: RIP, EIGRP stub and OSPF (1000 routes).
