You can change the license level on the switch with the command 'license boot level xxx'. There are two levels - network-essentials & network-advantage, with the DNA add-on's of dna-essentials & dna-advantage.
switch(config)#license boot level network-advantage addon dna-advantage
By default the switch will have either essentials or advantage and the dna add-on depending on what you purchased. If you aren't using DNA then you can remove the dna add-on as it does nothing without DNA-C. If you are on IOS-XE 16.9 - 17.3.1 then its Smart Licensing only and the licenses will be evaluation until they expire, then they will go out of compliance. My experience is nothing stops working, but you are no longer licensed.
17.3.2 changed the licensing and now the switches no longer need to register, although you are supposed to still set smart licensing up (I think...).

Hi Andrew,
I know this is an older post. I am looking at implementing some BGP so upgraded one of my switches to Network-Adv 90 day evaluation period only so I could test etc.
If I leave it as evaluation till the 90 days is up would BGP stop working, the impression I get is that it would continue to work. Which seems a bit unfair to CISCO and to do that isnt the right thing to do.
regards,
Chris.

Hi,
I am doing a simular thing to what you did above, converting a network-ess licence to network-Adv so I can use the BGP feature.
Did you have any problems after the 90 day eval period expired. I am concerned that if I start to use the BGP then it will stop working in 90days and we shall have network problems.
regards,
Chris.
