We're trying to replace an in-house presence/status app from 1995 with Jabber, but we keep running into the same usability argument. I'm wondering how other people handle this problem:
User is going to be on vacation for the next 2 weeks and want this to reflect in their Jabber status. They can set a custom Away status to "On vacation until 7/14/2014, call my cell", but as soon as they shut down their office computer, Jabber resets their status to Offline.
Just got out of a big meeting where they reiterated that the lack of this capability is a show-stopper for them. Any advice?

Sorry, we never got a solution. We considered some custom development to solve the problem. It's worth noting that the CUPC client didn't have this problem. A CUPC user could change their status and it would stick after they logged off. However, this was changed in the Jabber client.
